Signature Collection: "OK, you wrote a book, but how many times can you stand to write your name?"

The author of that article poses an interesting question: "Why, I sometimes wonder, does anybody want a book signed? I have a whole wall of books by friends, and it never occurs to me to ask them to sign them."

For true fans of an author's work, I don't think it's the signature that truly matters. It's that brief moment, while the author is signing the book to them, when the fan has an opportunity to say how much the author's work has affected their life, that really matters. They can later look at that signature in the book and have tangible proof that for one shining moment they were able to communicate with someone who has impacted them.

Celebrities (and yes, some authors can be considered celebrities), sometimes forget the impact that they have on the lives of millions of people. I can understand why they'd be upset at someone who wanted their autograph just so they could turn around and sell it; but, I think, for every person who does that, there are at least ten true fans who will prize that autograph and never even dream of selling it.

Go check out ST Gear, the apparel and accessories line my friend April just launched to help promote short track speed skating. I bought a ST Gear hoodie a while back, and let me tell you, it rocks!

Good luck with ST Gear, Apey! :)

Josh Groban + Houston concert = Happy Joanna

I did it. I have in hand - virtually, anyway - two tickets for Josh Groban's 8/14 Houston concert! *relieved sigh*

At $95 for each ticket, that's the most I've ever paid to attend a concert. But I know that it's worth it! I'm getting giddy just thinking about attending. I got good tickets, too, considering there were thousands of people trying to get tickets at the same time as me.

The concert is going to be held at the Woodlands Pavillion, an outdoor venue. Keep in mind that this will be in August in Houston. I don't know what they were thinking when they decided on that; but anyway, I got tickets in the covered area, thank goodness!

Sorry for the fangirlish post...But I had to write about this, or else I'd probably be extremely annoying to those actually around me! *bounces happily in chair* ;)

This dissection/commentary a la Mystery Science Theater of a truly horrible Lord of the Rings fan fiction is great! It had me literally laughing out loud.

It's been a while since I looked at my site stats. Some things people have searched for and somehow ended up at eclectica:
  • alarmingly long and dangerous toenails
  • digusting and gross stuff
  • who is a shemale
  • food of the future poem
  • disgusting recipes
  • which celebrity has simular lifestyle as oprah
  • fat wife
  • fairies in bikinis
  • pictures of picking noses
  • Frodo falling in love with a girl hobbit

There are a lot more, of course, except even weirder and more disturbing; so I won't list them. The things people search for online. *sigh*

These photos of the flag-draped coffins of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq should be seen, despite what the President says. I think we need reminders of the war's actual cost. (See The Memory Hole for more information.)

Also see Faces of the Fallen. Many of those men and women are the ages of me and my brothers, so very young...

    Some interesting movie news...

"The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are in talks to adapt Alice Sebold's best-selling novel The Lovely Bones..." More info here.

I've read The Lovely Bones and think it could definitely make an interesting movie; but I'd rather see Jackson's version of The Hobbit first!

I was already planning on seeing Troy, but now I absolutely must see it - and buy the soundtrack! Here's why...

The speculation is over... FOJG can confirm that Josh Groban has recorded the theme song and title track to this summer's epic film Troy (starring Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom). "Remember," written by James Horner and Cynthia Weil, was produced by David Foster during Josh's current Nashville tour stop and will be featured on the forthcoming Warner Sunset/Reprise movie soundtrack in stores soon!

    Yay, a new Josh song!

This site is rather interesting. You give it a picture of yourself, then it tells you which celebrities you look like.

I put in this picture of myself and it said I look like a mixture of Gina Gershon, Hsu Chu and Jamie Lee Curtis. Quite an odd combination!

(The site might not be working. It was posted on mefi, so it got slammed with hits, I'm sure.)

Kilt-Wearing Marine Plays Bagpipes in Iraq: "'Playing on the battlefield -- I never thought that would happen,' Farr said...'Kilts are something that fighting men wore many years ago, and we know that the Marines are fighting men. So real men wear kilts. And they are pretty comfortable too,' he said."

Doesn't look like there's a new Friday Five this week, so here's last week's:

    1. What do you do for a living?
I'm an Online Content Producer for a daily newspaper. That's a rather vague title, I know. Basically, I'm in charge of our daily content. I update the main page with breaking news throughout the day and do two major news updates at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., along with sending out news email digests and news alerts. I help with web-only content, from special sections to our online-only columnists. Plus, there's the ever-present maintenance: Making sure links, images, graphics, site navigation, etc. are working. (We have night staff that takes the contents of the paper and puts it online.)

    2. What do you like most about your job?
It's rather cool to be working in such a new field. New Media has only been around for about 10 years. There are so many advances happening in online journalism. (When I was younger, I always thought I'd work in journalism, but I never imagined it would be in this capacity!)

    3. What do you like least about your job?
The fluctuation between monotony and stressful busyness. See below.

    4. When you have a bad day at work it's usually because _____...
I get hit with more than one or two projects that must be done, like, 10 minutes ago! (This happens often. *sigh*)

    5. What other career(s) are you interested in?
Editor, author, etymologist/linguist, librarian...I could go on, but the likelihood of me actually doing these careers are slim.

There are only two people I'll go out my way to watch if they're going to be on TV: Apolo Ohno and Josh Groban.

Apolo was on last weekend, for the Short Track Speed Skating World Championships; and Josh was on this morning, performing on ABC's Good Morning America. His performance was wonderful! If you're curious about why I like his voice so much, go download the video. And, if you like that, check out Josh's website for more of his music.

I watched The Butterfly Effect last night. I like movies that keep me guessing and "on the edge of my seat." The Butterfly Effect did both of those things. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone: It's intense, with some rather violent scenes. But, if you're in the mood for a "mind game" movie, check it out.

By the way, most of the critics panned this movie, but I'm not one to listen to the critics! ;)
