Inline left out - Derek Parra and many other inline skating champions have been forced to give up the fight for the sport they love for a shot at Olympic glory.: "'I told people when I won 18 world gold medals [in inline skating] I could have set myself on fire in the electrical aisle of Home Depot and no one would have cared,'" Parra said.

If table tennis can be in the Olympics, I think inlining should be as well!

I haven't posted quiz results in a long time...
What Video Game Character Are You? I am Mario.I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. What Pre-1985 Video Game Character Are You?

I'm not sure this will be seen by the man himself, but I want to give a birthday shout out to Apolo Anton Ohno, an Olympic medalist and all-around great guy. Happy 22nd birthday, Apolo! May this year be your best yet! :)

Poverty's Palatte: "In our mind's eye, much of the past exists in black and white." (That's a NYTimes link, so you'll have to register. I think it's worth it, just to see those pictures!)

It's amazing how color photographs can make things appear closer and more "real" and present.

Also: Check out the Metafilter thread where I got the link for more sites with early color photography.

I've been keeping track of the books I've read over the past 3 years, but I never created a booklog. Until now, that is. Check out my new booklog over at eclecticat.net/booklog.

If you have a book weblog, please leave a comment with it's URL, as I'd love to check other booklogs out!

    Blogs colliding with traditional media:
Among the media credential applications for this summer's Democratic National Convention -- from the TV networks, newspapers, and radio stations -- is the one from 21-year-old Jesse Taylor, a pundit of the self-declared variety.

He may not be a traditional journalist, but the recent college graduate does have a blog, a website called pandagon.net, where his opinions on current events and the press draw 12,000 readers per day. And from the standpoint of Democratic National Convention organizers, that could be good enough....

Over the past couple years, weblogs have become more accepted as media, especially now that newspapers are finally catching on and starting their own weblogs.

It's kind of funny to me to hear and read media pundits exclaiming that weblogs are the newest and hottest thing around, since I've been blogging for 4.5 years. I've never been too political on my weblog and don't plan on starting any time soon. Weblogging is just a fun hobby for me. I don't want it to be work.

Some cool The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe movie news:

Pictures of the lion choosen to play Aslan. I'm really happy that they're using a real lion; I was afraid they'd use a computer-generated lion.

Tilda Swinton Confirmed as the White Witch. I'm so glad that Nicole Kidman wasn't choosen!

Half-Price Books rocks. I was there last night and picked up A Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula K. Le Guin; The Golden Compass, by Phillip Pullman; and The Once and Future King, by T.H. White all for $5. Doesn't get much better than that!

Listen to the theme song to Troy: Remember, by Josh Groban here. Can't wait for the movie!

Watching Survivor is one of my guilty pleasures. It's five days late, but here are some of my thoughts on the Survivor: All Stars finale...

I was rooting for Rupert to win, but wasn't surprised, at all, when he was booted. Jenna made a mistake when she voted with Amber and Rob to vote him out, I think.

The marriage proposal from Rob to Amber at the reunion? It was sweet, even though I can't stand either of them. I'm such a sucker for things like that.

I didn't care whether Amber or Rob won the million. Like I said, I don't like either of them that much. Anyway, since they're engaged now, they'll probably be sharing the money.

Jerri leaving the reunion after the crowd booed her? I don't sympathize with her. If she didn't know what she was getting into the first time she played Survivor, she definitely knew the second time -- and that leaves her no room to complain, I think.

Colby & Ethan were looking good at the reunion. I was bummed when they were voted off. Not only are they great-looking guys, they played the game with integrity. (Not that having integrity has any benefits while playing a game like Survivor!)

The "twist" that they kept referring to is pretty cool: We get to vote for one of the 18 "All-Stars" to receive an additional one million dollars. I'm voting for Rupert. I can't say exactly why I like him. I guess he reminds me of my dad, a big ol' teddy bear who'll turn into a grizzly the moment his family or loved ones are threatened in any way.

All in all, I thought this season of Survivor was one of the best. Oh, and rumor has it that the next sSurvivor will be filmed in the United States. Interesting, very interesting.

So, I've made another new layout. It's different than anything I've made before. I was in the mood for a drastic change! It looks best at 1024x768, but will work in other resolutions. If you have any problems, email me or leave a comment here!

We'll see how long this one lasts! ;)

BlogBinders is a really cool idea: Have your weblog bound as a real book. (Right now, you can only get your LiveJournal or DeadJournal bound. They say that soon they'll be able to support Blogger, Movable Type and others.)

Ten on Tuesday: Ten Things You Probably Don't Know About Me. One day late.
    1. I've never broken a bone in my body (Knock on wood!)
    2. I was homeschooled for most of my school years.
    3. I've never been to Mexico, even though it's only a 3-4 hour drive from where I live. I have been to Canada, though. Go figure.
    4. My right thumb is double-jointed.
    5. When I was three I had to get stitches under my left eye, after running in front of a metal swing.
    6. I've kept a paper journal for 10 and a half years.
    7. I think nopalitos are yummy raw. They taste kind of like green peppers.
    8. I usually carry a notebook, pen, and novel with me wherever I go.
    9. From 1998 to 2001, I edited an online 'zine called eclectic magazine. (I'd link to it, but the archives are no longer online.)
    10. There are many other things that you don't know about me, and I'd like to keep it that way. ;)
