U-Turin: City does about-face for Games. Italy's 'Detroit' tunes up for 2006 Olympics

It's less than 500 days until the 2006 Winter Olympics. I'm getting really excited about attending! I've heard that it's hard to get tickets to popular events, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll actually be able to get tickets for the short track speed skating competitions!

It's silly, but this almost made me squeal with joy: Leno to Retire from 'Tonight Show' in 2009: "Jay Leno, America's leading late-night comedian as host of NBC's "The Tonight Show," will retire in 2009 and be replaced by Conan O'Brien, an offbeat comic whose own show airs an hour later"

Woohoo, gotta love Conan!

I caught the premier of Lost last night, mainly because it has Dominic Monaghan (Best know as Merry from the LOTR movie trilogy) in it. It was rather silly, to say the least; but I'm going to keep watching the show, just 'cause sometimes silliness is the best form of entertainment. ;D

Cleolinda wrote a recap that sums it up way better than I can. Go read it!

I picked up Never Threaten to Eat Your Co-Workers: Best of Blogs at the library last week.

One complaint: Twenty-four bloggers were featured in the book; some of those bloggers only had one entry published, while others had up to ten published. I think it would have been more interesting and diverse if each weblogger only had one entry published, thus giving more people a chance to be published.

Also, while the book is interesting, and often, hilarious, I think the "Best of Blogs" subtitle is rather misleading. Only three people judged the entries, so really, the entries are the the "best" according to only a few people. Well, at least the FAQ in the book made that clear.

It felt rather odd reading blog entries in a book, yet pleasant, too. I still read more offline that online, so it was nice to be able to read stuff that I'd normally have to read online in hardcopy. According to the editors of the book, there will be more of these types of books in the future. I'll probably check them out.

My favorite entry in the book is by Uncle Bob. They took the title of the book from his entry, which you can read over at his weblog: Job Tip #515: Never Threaten to Eat Your Co-workers. I was laughing out loud practically the whole time I was reading it!

A couple admin notes:

I just set up permalinks, which means each of my posts gets its own page. You can access those by click on the "#" under each post.

I also set up "Email this post," which gives you the ablity to email my posts. You can do that by clicking on the envelope graphic with the arrow on it below each entry.

As some of you may have heard by now, I was offered a position at a new company on Friday; and I accepted. My new job title will be "Marketing Production and eNews Specialist." I'm really excited about this new job, which I start on Sept. 27. I think it may open up some doors for me.

I don't write about my work very often on my weblog, but I thought some of you might be curious. :)

I've never done this one before. The Weekly Bit:

1. How long have you been online? Not today, but in total, how long have you had your computer?
Well, I've used computers longer than I've been online. The first computer I ever laid my eyes on was when I was probably 3 or 4 years old (that would be in '83 or '84): it was a Mac; I remember being rather fascinated by the Apple symbol. The first computer I ever used was in school, another Mac. We got a family PC in about 1992, I think. We didn't get Internet access until October '97, so I've been online for almost 7 years. Oh, wait...I just remembered: We used to dial-up to local BBS' back in about 1993; and I think we tried AOL and CompuServe then, too. I've had my own computer since 2001.

2. Do you have many online friends? Have you ever met any in person or spoken to them over the phone?
I guess that depends on what you mean by "many." I think I have an average amount. I don't really like to chat/IM that much, so that kind of cuts down on the opportunities to make online friends. I have met some really awesome people online, though, and I'm happy that some of them have become my "real life" friends.

3. What are your favorite things to do while online?
Read weblogs, update my own weblog, check out my favorite websites, post on bulletin boards, get the news, email, visit my favorite site, occasionally play games; the basic stuff, I guess.

4. List your favorite websites.
Well, I have a lot, so here's just a selection. (I'm not going to list personal sites/blogs here.):

1) Metafilter. Best community weblog!
2) Internet Movie Database. This site is so useful for finding trivial information! ;)
3) Google. I almost feel like I shouldn't be listing this one, it's so obvious; but I love all its tools: News, Froogle, Images, etc. Not to mention, it's still the best search engine out there, in my opinion.
4) Yahoo!Mail. I've had an account there since I've been online; and it's never disappointed me.
5) M-W.com. This online dictionary has ruined print dictionaries for me forever.
6) LiveJournal. LiveJournal just isn't for teenies; there are some awesome communities there; and it's not a bad journal/blog tool, either!
I could go on, but I'll stop there.

5. Do you know HTML, Javascripts? Do you create your own webpages and graphics? Do you have any websites?
HTML? Check. Javascript? Some. Create my own webpages and graphics. Check.

Yeah, I have websites:

1) eclectica, the one you're currently reading.
2) Apolo Anton Ohno Portal, a website devoted to Olympic speed skater Apolo Ohno. I started it in February 2002. (You might notice it hasn't been updated since July. It's the off-season right now, so there's not much to report/post. I'll be doing an update soon, though, since the season is kicking off next month.)

6. What do you hate about the internet? What annoys you most about it?
SPAM! Hax0rs! (*rolls eyes*) Viruses! Online drama/flame wars!

Random movie recommendation:

If you're looking for a funny, sweet and romantic movie, check out Amélie. It was released three years ago, but I just got around to watching it. It's great, one of my favorite movies now!

Wow. Just...wow!

New Orleans was spared mightily when Hurricane Ivan made landfall this morning. It would have been horrendous if it had made landfall in New Orleans: Direct hit by Ivan in New Orleans could mean a modern Atlantis.

We've been extremely fortunate here on the Gulf coast of Texas this year. Normally, we'll get a tropical storm at the very least; but this year, no storms have come our way.

Well, I finally decided to update eclectica's layout. It's darker, but more whimsical than the layouts I've been creating lately. A change feels good.

It feels odd and yet rather refresing not to be "link blogging" anymore. I'll still be posting links from time to time, but it won't be my focus. What will be my focus? I'm not sure. I guess you'll find out as I go along! ;)

It's awesome to urge people to vote, but I think that Carrie The Vote is just insulting. They act as if every single woman out there is a character from "Sex and the City." Ugh.
