Alphabet of Thorn
By Patricia A. McKillip [Amazon link]

My rating: 5/5

This is the story of Nepenthe, a lonely orphaned girl taken in by the librarians and scribes of the Royal Libray in the magical country of Raine. She discovers a book, a book written in an alphabet of thorns that speaks to her in a way she doesn't understand. As the thorns slowly work their way into her life, they reveal more than she wants to know.

The Gunslinger
By Stephen King [Amazon Link]

My rating: 2.5/5

What an odd, eerie, dream-like book! It was somewhat hard to read, very confusing at times, but the ending promises good things to come. The Gunslinger is the first in Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Read the Amazon write-up if you want more details. I still don't understand everything that happened in the book. Hopefully, the other books in the series will shed some light on the enigmatic events of The Gunslinger.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
By J.K. Rowling [Amazon link]

My rating: 5/5.

I've grown so attached to the characters in the Harry Potter series: I love the story, I love Harry and his friends. Can't wait to read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix!

Outlander
By Diana Gabaldon [Amazon Link]

My rating: 3/5

I didn't know much about Outlander before I picked it up to read, only that it was about a woman from the mid-20th century catapulted into the mid-18th century when she stumbled upon a stone circle in the Highlands of Scotland.

It's a romance novel, to be sure; but it's not filled with gratuitous sex scenes, although there is a fair share of those. There's plenty of adventure, fighting and intrigue -- and a truly reprehensible vilain, too.

After reading all 850 pages, though, I'm left wondering: Why did the author choose to write so much? I think the story could have been told just as well in less than half the pages.

All that considered, I give the book three stars out of five.
